Claude Speed and Catalina relocate to Liberty City in order to continue their criminal careers after fleeing San Andreas and engaging in a crime rampage across the country. During the robbery of a bank, Catalina and her Colombian companion Miguel betray Claude, and she kills him with a gunshot as they are fleeing the scene of the crime. Miguel was Catalina’s accomplice in the theft. Within the confines of the jail cell, Claude makes a full recovery. However, Colombians ambush the prison van that Claude is riding in when he is being carried to prison. Claude is one of the passengers. Claude and his pal 8-Ball are able to get away throughout this ordeal. Right now is the moment for payback. Claude works his way up the ranks of the local gangs, eventually earning the trust of the local mafia bosses and betraying his peers in the process. Along the way, Claude builds up his influence and trust, and most significantly, his financial standing. It is now time for Claude to avenge himself by returning from the grave and exacting his vengeance on Catalina for what she has done.

The gameplay of Grand Theft Auto III is very similar to that of its two previous installments. The player takes on the character of a ruthless (but inexperienced) criminal who completes missions for more powerful criminals in order to advance in the criminal underworld. The player’s primary objective throughout the game is to drive, but they also have the option to walk around and investigate the entire city. The entirety of the game has been brought into 3D for the very first time in the franchise. When you’re behind the wheel, you can choose from a variety of camera angles; when you’re on foot, you have an unrestricted rotation of the camera.

Liberty City is the sole city that may be explored in this installment of the series, in contrast to the other cities that were available in the previous games. The game places a greater emphasis on the narrative by showing cutscenes prior to the start of each mission. It is necessary to accomplish all of the primary story missions in order to finish the game; however, the player will frequently be offered the option to choose between more than one task at any given point in time. The missions feature activities such as chases, races, and brief third-person shooter scenes, in addition to a variety of different minigame-like challenges. Aside from the main tasks, the player is free to roam around the city and take on side quests. These can include things like working as a cab driver, transporting sick patients to the hospital in an ambulance, and other such activities.
