Midway has created a series of American football–centered video games called NFL Blitz, which include clubs from the National Football League. It started as an arcade game in 1997 and was then converted to home consoles. Since then, it has spawned several sequels. The Blitz series was intended as an over-the-top, exaggerated representation of the sport of football and was influenced by Midway’s own NBA Jam basketball games. Unlike other football video game franchises, such as Madden NFL and NFL 2K, the Blitz series was not designed to be a genuine interpretation of the sport of football. In 2005, the Blitz series was relaunched as Blitz: The League, featuring fictional players and teams in a fictional league with slightly more realistic (albeit still exaggerated) on-field action and a focus on the sleazy behind-the-scenes lives of the players. This was done following the loss of the NFL license in 2005. On January 4, 2012, a new series chapter was released on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. The game brought the series back to the original style of NFL BLITZ; however, owing to input from the NFL, the late hits were taken out of the game entirely.
