The Game Boy Advance itself functions as a PET in Real Operation, allowing the user to control several NetNavis from prior games in the series. The game could also be played with the Battle Chip Gate, a Game Boy device that enabled players to utilize real-life toy Battle Chips, a feature carried over to other titles in the series. Real Operation users may now participate in multiplayer games against Battle Network 4 and other Real Operation users. Because the Battle Chip gate is a significant element of most of the gameplay, the game was not published outside of Japan because the accessories, such as the e-reader, not being trendy in the US. Real Operation is also compatible with the Nintendo e-Reader, allowing you to unlock specific Navis, some of which are essential to complete the game. Navis also provides the player with unique features and mini-games, such as NumberMan, which will assist the player in studying arithmetic problems, and each Navi has various personality qualities that will vary the playing experience as they converse and interact with you. The game also has a real-time structure, and tournaments will be hosted in-game on particular days of the week for the player to compete in, or you may set reminders on calendars that your Navi will keep track of. Darkloid versions of Navis from Mega Man Battle Network 4 (such as TopMan) arrive in cyberspace for the player to fight. Unlike other Battle Network games, you do not control the NetNavis in battle during the game’s course. Instead, they move independently, and you give combat Chips to them by either picking them during combat (like in prior Battle Network games) or manually inserting them into the Battle Chip Gate. You may also change their evasive methods to direct them closer or further away from the enemy to launch strikes. As a result, no human actors appear in the game to imitate a real PET experience with the user as the NetOperator. While the game was not published in the United States, hacking in Battle Network 5: Double Team DS reveals that the game can be run precisely the same manner as 4.5, using the same windows and whatnot, but the player is limited to Megaman and whatever chips they start with.
